Hailing from the tropical island of Sri Lanka, Ruby immigrated to Aotearoa New Zealand in 2008. As she navigated life in a new country, art became a way for her to remain connected to her cultural identity while embracing her new home. Ruby is deeply inspired by the rich traditions of South Asian folk art, continually exploring its diverse forms and histories. She incorporates its vibrant colours, intricate patterns, and symbolic motifs into her work, weaving these influences into each piece as a celebration of heritage, memory, and belonging.
