Presented by At By The River Gallery, Julie Whyman is a mixed-media artist based in rural Waikato, whose richly layered paintings draw inspiration from the landscapes, trees and native birds of the Waikato and Coromandel Peninsula. Moving between abstraction and representation, Julie builds her works with paint, ink, pastel, collage and metal leaf, creating depth, texture and luminosity. Tīeke, kōtuku and pīwakawaka often emerge from or become part of the landscape itself. A self-taught artist, Julie works intuitively, allowing each painting to develop through experimentation and discovery. Her distinctive work is held in private collections throughout New Zealand and internationally.
