Presented by rt By The River Gallery, Merv Richdale is a New Zealand sculptor and former international chainsaw carver whose work combines bold, confident forms with extraordinarily detailed surfaces. His large-scale sculptures are painstakingly constructed by hand from individually selected fragments of glass and ceramic. Guardian of Taupō (Tai), his striking tiger sculpture, was created using material gathered over nine years from the shores of Lake Taupō. The sculpture itself then took a further year to construct, giving the work an extraordinary connection to both place and time. Merv has also worked extensively in photography, documenting the landscapes of New Zealand’s Central Plateau.
