“The King’s Trust has been instrumental in my development both as a creative and as an entrepreneur. Through the combination of workshops, mentoring, exposure, and financial support, I have been able to propel the growth of my business significantly.”
Shawnee was supported with funds from He Kākano and selected as The King’s Trust Young Emerging Artist for 2024 at the art show, Art in the Park. Her participation at Art in the Park allowed her to showcase her latest series of works to the largest audience she had ever engaged with – 11,000 people attended the 3-day event at Eden Park in Auckland. “Witnessing the way people’s faces lit up upon encountering my work was truly heartwarming, and this emotional connection remains the most rewarding aspect of the experience.”
Shawnee sold thirteen pieces, including two original paintings, three framed prints, and eight loose prints. The success continued online, with several print designs and limited-edition skateboards being sold, along with securing two upcoming commissions. The total value of works sold reached more than $23,000, and she gained two commissions following the show.
“To emerge with such a remarkable record of sales was both mind-blowing and humbling. Engaging with so many people was a new and enriching experience. The insights I gained will be invaluable for shaping future business strategies."
Beyond the financial success, Shawnee’s experience at the exhibition allowed her to expand her network within the art community. She forged connections with fellow artists who offered mentorship and shared experiences. In late 2024, Shawnee won the Prime Minister’s Scholarship to Japan where she held her first international solo show as part of a two-month residency and she said, “Like a lot of creatives, it’s hard to support myself, focus on artwork and be passionate about it without support to ease the worry.” “I am profoundly grateful to the King’s Trust for their unwavering support in my creative and entrepreneurial journey. This opportunity has not only accelerated my business growth but has also significantly increased my confidence in the continued success of my artistic career.
